Headaches, a common symptom of anxiety, can occur in the majority of children who have special needs. The onset of the headaches can come from out of no where causing us as parents to become alarmed. As an instinctive protocol, we may give our children, children's Tylenol or children's Motrin, whichever you prefer and sure you may take them to their primary provider. These are good measures; however, if you child constantly worries, have the tendency to focus on negative events (past or current), exhibit physical symptoms such as headaches, etc. it is possible that your child may have anxiety. There are many forms of anxiety that aren't frequently addressed such as nail and skin biting, excessive talking, etc. The work that I do in consulting and coaching children with special needs and families of children with special needs, I discuss various methods that can be beneficial in alleviating headaches due to anxiety that I will share below:
Lavender Lemonade- is an effective healthy drink that is shown in reducing headaches, anxiety and stress.
EFT Tapping- During my sessions with the children that I consult and coach, I include EFT Tapping. I also encourage their parents and/or caregivers to utilize EFT Tapping at home as well. EFT Tapping used as a therapeutic calming mechanism is an effective healing tool for emotional and physical issues.
Yoga- During my sessions, I include yoga as an individual session or a group. My social yoga groups increases socialization skills in children with special needs but much like EFT Tapping, it is also considered a healing tool for emotional and physical issues.
The three methods that I listed above are just some of the coping mechanisms that I discuss and implement in my consultant and coaching sessions with children and I encourage parent and caregivers to utilize these practices at home. These methods are proven to be beneficial with a satisfactory rate in enhancing children’s socialization skills while reducing and eliminating symptoms due to anxiety.
